Ointments

Different than a balm in that it is semisolid and is generally 80% Oils and 20% Water. This ratio provides a barrier on the skin and prevents moisture-loss. This also allows a slower delivery of the herbal ingredients.

Base Recipe

From: The Master Book of Herbalism by Paul Beyerl

  • 1 oz herbs

  • 16 oz fixative (carrier oil)

  • heat off and on for 24 hours

  • Set up a double boiler with your carrier oil. Melt and then add the herbs.

  • Simmer the mixture on very low heat for a half hour, then strain out the herbs.

  • Pour into a container and allow to cool and thicken before using.

Keep in fridge to help preserve consistency.
